What trips me out is the federal governments reaction is to back up their guys 100% no matter what actually happened. Their statements were immediately "the guy that got shot deserved it, and our guys are heroes".

I did. Why else would I have a membership here.
Also, it has nothing to do with a "sentence" for a crime. The officers were trying to arrest this individual. He resisted, and in doing so, posed to the officers what they perceived to be a potentially deadly threat, whether he was reaching for one of their weapons, or attempting to produce his own.
If you were a police officer, you'd do the exact same thing, because you, like all other humans, value the lives of yourself and your kin above all others.
