Because dead fuckers can’t sue you for injury and medical bills. Also it’s not a movie most people under stress can’t hit the torso of a man much less a target the size of a leg. You must also consider that most self defence rounds won’t pass through a torso. That’s important because you don’t want to shoot anyone or anything you didn’t intend on shooting. When it’s gone to pulling the trigger it is way beyond a point that the bad guy deserves a second chance.

The Russian police use the MP-443 Grach it is designed much like a Sig P series. it is a 9mm handgun and fires the same 9mm ammo as what you will find most police carrying here in the US.

The number one reason US cops don’t shoot people in the legs is because if you shoot someone and they live they can sue the hell out of you.
Injury
Pain & Suffering
Medical bills
And there are several more things that can be piled on. Then there is the whole thing about not actually feeling a threat to your life because you didn’t shoot the threat in an area known to stop an attack.
All of it gets very convoluted and it’s just easier to put the bad guy in the dirt permanently.

I'd had said "sorry" backed away slowly, gone inside my house, grabbed by rifle, took position behind an engine block, take aim, demand they lower their weapons, and as SOON as that weapon is raised even a CENTIMETER, 10 rounds in the sons head, then I'd let the father get a few rounds off while staying proned behind the engine block, and waiting for the tears to start flowing. Obviously you need to have someone filming your execution, but I doubt a court would see it as less than self defense if you're demanding the person lower their weapon first and foremost...

How many rounds can that handgun hold? Looks like a 22, maybe 10? I'd take those odds behind a engine block...

SCENARIO:

In spit second, a decision needs to be made;

Shoot at legs?
Shoot at chest? - centre mass
Die or, or held hostage and bummed?
