I wonder what dialect of Chinese that was? Didn’t sound completely like Mandarin and definitely wasn’t Cantonese. Maybe Hakka?

Absolutely not. First, “Malaysian” isn’t a language. It’s Malay. Second, Malay sounds nothing like Chinese. It is closer to Indonesian and sounds like Filipino also. I can understand all three to varying degrees, so I know it’s Chinese, but I’m just not sure which dialect it is.
