Looks to me like he was a novice swimmer finding out the hard way he's negative buoyant and didn't know how to compensate for it. His breathing sounded panicked almost immediately, like he realized he was out too far, but ended up burning too much energy trying to get back to safety.

The thing I question about that theory though is why didn't he call out to the woman we can hear in the background, or have his little girl get her attention. I don't know if he was trying hard not to looked panicked, or if they're was some kind of medical thing going on that prevented him from doing so, or if by that point he was simply too tired, idk.

Maybe he once knew how but had forgotten or was out of shape or the water was cold? I was 15 years old before I learned to swim which is pretty old but at least I finally learned. One of the first and most basic things they teach you is how to "dog paddle". You won't travel far but you'll keep your head above water. And when you run out of energy you learn to turn over on your back, tilt your head back and move your arms and hand back and forth from side to side and kick your legs calmly to stay afloat and catch your breath. It takes almost no energy. You can do it for hours.

I wish someone would have taught me that. What a difference to be taught how not to drown, rather than how to swim.

Could this have been more of a suicide? None of his water moves made any sense. He could have grabbed onto that ledge but didn't. Also didn't look like any current below him. I call it a suicide.

For some reason black people arent the best swimmers. Not sure about the science of it but you just dont see black people swimming at the olympis etc
