To be honest, I think the other kids were wise. If the kids are not trained in lifesaving, there's a high likelihood that they would drown together with the drowning kid. My mom once tried to save me from drowning in the ocean when I was about 8 years old, and she nearly drowned doing so (even though she was a proficient swimmer). My uncle happened to be scuba diving nearby and he saved us both. He first saved me, at which point my mom was able to save herself.
