Looks like he pushed on it to set it off. I think that was a percussion detonator. a decent grenade would have taken half his face off.

Hand grenades often don't look dramatic. The US military did propose the idea of a nuclear grenade though, and took this to the final design stage, using the element Californium . Only the cost of refining the element made it impractical. |

Yeah. He totally knew it was mortal, he's dead, killed. He just walked that loop on last 10 seconds of muscle memory. Hoping for his mommy's face. Probably was another 10 minutes or so of screaming and more of that youthful trying to desperatly swim away, before the end.
