He probably had shrapnel in his brain or the rapid loss of blood pressure from his chest wound. He looked like he held it close to his head. Looked small for a grenade. |

A regular grenade would probably have taken out the three of them, but yes, it seemed to have been a detonator of sorts, or a home-made device.
