From what I have seen, a lot of people at these protests fall into the second and third group you described, with a smaller number in the first. But there are also two other types of participants that tend to show up at large demonstrations:

Some are basically along for the ride. Their friends are going, it feels like the cultural moment, or they agree in a vague way but could not explain the policy details if asked.

And then you get the chaos tourists, agitators, or counter people who show up specifically to stir trouble or escalate. Their participation has nothing to do with the original cause.

So you end up with a crowd that looks unified, but the motivations inside it are all over the place.

You know WonderMomma Australia to a lesser degree is just like you. We are divided and sadly broken.

Because of successive Government decisions over decades we have become a nation of tribes. Like you we have two main political parties. We have Labor (Democrats) and Liberal (Republicans) .

We are lucky here, we are a huge island ( same land mass as the USA) but just 28 million . Whereas you have over 300 million with land borders .

Over the past 40 to 50 yrs Australia has changed its immigration policy. Up to the 70’s Australia had what was called the white Australian immigration policy. Up to then after WW2 we lost so many men and needed to repopulate to get our country back on its feet.

Italians, Greeks , Americans, Canadians , Scandinavians , UK came to our country . We all get on apart from us Aussies calling the Greeks and Italians ….WOGS!

But we got over it. We matured. However things stated to change in the 70’s.

We started to allow in immigrants from the Lebanese civil war. The Govt at the time was warned to NOT LET IN Muslim Lebanese refugees. Christian Lebanese was said to be ok.

Blast forward 50 years. Our two biggest cities Melbourne and Sydney have Middle Eastern Muslim ghettos.

Note I say Muslim Middle Eastern. There are plenty of countries of Muslim religion descent like Indonesia and Malaysia who live peacefully here and contribute to our Aussie society.

Every week here we have Muslim Middle Eastern grubs walking through our cities with their useful white idiot mates, marching through chanting crap over Gaza…..

The silent majority of us Aussies are at boiling point.

The Bondi massacre has tipped us.

Australia has now changed forever.

We need ICE here. Trouble is we let the parents of these grubs in.

Protests and unrest have continued in Minneapolis with both law enforcement and demonstrators describing heightened tension and ongoing clashes. Live reporting notes that this activity has extended into the week with emergency services monitoring the situation.

Polling data released during this period indicates that a majority of Americans view the shooting of Renee Good as inappropriate or unjustified and disagree with the federal government’s defense of the agent’s actions.

The Department of Justice has reaffirmed that it will not open a civil rights investigation into the shooting despite continued protest activity and criticism from advocacy groups.

The Department of Justice filed a notice of intent to appeal a federal judge’s order that placed restrictions on how federal immigration agents could interact with peaceful protesters in Minneapolis. That judge’s order prohibited federal agents from arresting or using force such as tear gas or pepper spray against individuals who were peacefully protesting or merely observing immigration enforcement operations unless there was reasonable suspicion of interference or a crime. The appeal was filed in response to that order and remains under review by the court.
