CBS News reports that the ICE agent who shot Renee Nicole Good suffered internal bleeding and has not returned to work:

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who fatally shot Renee Good last week in Minneapolis, Jonathan Ross, suffered internal bleeding to the torso following the incident, according to two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition.

It was unclear how extensive the bleeding was. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Ross' injury, but has not yet responded to CBS News' requests for more information. This story will be updated as we learn more.

Videos from the scene showed Ross walking away after the incident.

Ross has not returned to work, one source said, but did not say why.

Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security secretary, previously acknowledged that Ross was taken to the hospital after the shooting and was released the same day. She said he was recovering from his injuries, describing him as an experienced law enforcement officer who believed he was defending himself and fellow agents.

"The officer was hit by the vehicle. She hit him. He went to the hospital. A doctor did treat him. He has been released," Noem told reporters on Jan. 7.

Ross, a 10-year law enforcement veteran with ICE, was seriously injured in June in a separate incident in the Minneapolis area when he was dragged by a car during an attempted arrest, requiring 33 stitches and hospital care, court records show.

U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino told CBS News in an interview Sunday that Ross "has had several threats against his life," adding, "he's in a safe location. He's recovering from those injuries, and we're thankful that he's recovering."

On the moderation issue for both of you and anyone else reading: Vedderman’s handling of this thread has already been asked, answered, and explained at length in this thread. The information is there for anyone who wants it. Repeating inaccurate claims about moderation does not change the facts and is just disrupting the flow of discussion.

If you have an issue with how a moderator handled something, the proper procedure is to contact that moderator directly or message Chris privately.

This is a privately owned site, not a democracy. Ved has been a moderator here for over a decade and Chris is clearly satisfied with how he moderates.

If we are going to debate this, at least try to do it like grown adults. I really don't want to shut it down.

Speak your mind, have heated arguments, disagree strongly, whatever. Just cut down on the pointless personal shots. They add nothing and derail the thread.

I am honestly amazed you're defending his childish behavior. There is so much negative feedback on his "moderation" skills, and yet other mods defend him. Very sad to see.

They'll slash your throat for even drawing him. Now, not only many muslims men do not think that 52 year old marrying a 6 year old is bad, they believe it is sunnah for them to marry young girls. Sunnah means following exactly what Muhammad did.

I appreciate you sharing part of your background. Your experience clearly shaped how you view Islam, and I am not here to deny or invalidate that. It also lands in the territory I was talking about earlier, which is that the most intense or alarming parts of any religion or ideology tend to get the most attention and end up being treated as if they represent everyone, even when they do not.

On the historical point you raised, child marriage existed in many cultures around the world at that time, including Christian Europe and other societies. Today, most of us view that as morally wrong because our understanding of childhood and consent has changed. From a secular standpoint, I view moral judgments as tied to time and culture rather than religious authority, so I do not approach these figures the way believers do.

Where I push back is on generalization. There is a very big difference between what you experienced inside a specific religious school or community and what two billion Muslims around the world believe or practice. There are Muslims who take certain hadith as literal, Muslims who interpret them differently, Muslims who reject those hadith as authentic, and Muslims who are completely secular. None of those groups showed up in your description.

You mentioned that some people you knew would respond violently to criticism of Muhammad. I obviously do not support violence over speech and that reaction is disturbing to me. It is also true that in some countries and communities, blasphemy against Muhammad is treated very severely, sometimes even violently. That has more to do with local law, political structures, education systems, and cultural enforcement than it does with every Muslim worldwide. There are also many Muslims who oppose those laws entirely.

So to bring it back to my original point: I am not here to defend Islam and I am not dismissing your lived experience. I am saying that one community or one interpretation does not define two billion people. That was the point I was making from the start.

Having said all that, we are pretty far off the original topic, so I will bow out of the Islam tangent here.

I am not defending childish behavior. I am pointing out that this thread has turned into a dogpile and all the constant complaints about moderation are a) asked and answered earlier in the thread and obviously being ignored and b) seriously derailing the thread from the actual topic.

This is an attempt to get this train wreck back on topic so it does not have to be shut down. Heated but healthy debate about hot button issues is important, but in this environment it can quickly turn into walking a tightrope with your shoes on fire.

As for moderation, every moderator here has a different personality, a different style, and a different threshold for conflict. That is normal. And we, as a whole, respect the differences. Chris owns the site and sets the rules for how he wants it run and enforced. The fact that Ved has been a moderator here for over ten years should tell you everything you need to know about how Chris views his moderation overall.

If you want to discuss the actual subject, then discuss it. If you have an issue with how a moderator handled something, the proper procedure is to message that moderator directly or to message Chris.
