You don't die from water inside the lungs. As soon as the water, or anything else, touches the inside of the lungs, they close up, all the little breathing holes, the alveoli, and your body stops you dumping carbon dioxide out. You die of co2 poisoning, not through lack of oxygen.

Belay that last bit, I was remembering what makes you desperate to breathe, co2, it is not that which actually kills you. Oxygen starvation and brain damage does that.
