Once cardiac arrest sets in death is almost immediate, but heart failure itself can take hours or even days to kill.

He could have been very ill for hours before his death.

I know of a case here where a 13 year old school boy complained that he had been feeling unwell the entire day, then went to catch a nap and never woke up. Heart attack.
