Reach is everything, spears used to be main battle weapons. You could also use the pole to thrust, trip etc

I know the guy with the pole won this fight, but I seriously don't know which weapon id rather choose in a fight to the death. considering both of us were the same size.

With the machete, you're at a huge reach disadvantage but can finish him if you catch the pole and get close to him. plus the pole is heavy to swing. I honestly don't know which one is pick.

pole. in the proper hands, a stick can be a very destructive weapon against knife and sword. both for attack and defense.
