These cops sign up to be the "tough guy", and go around yelling and demanding things from citizens yet their first instinct is to pull out their guns and shoot if someone opposes. I realize this is an old post, but it bothered me enough that I felt I had to reply. Where are you getting your statistics from? Where are you getting your information from?

There is a gigantic, unfounded belief that people with firearms regularly protect themselves from crimes, and that without guns criminals would just find other ways to kill people. That belief is entirely false.

Regarding a study on people using guns to protect themselves: "This equated to two times out of 1,000 criminal incidents (0.2%) that occurred in this period, including criminal incidents where no guns were involved at all.[82] For violent crimes, assault, robbery, and rape, guns were used 0.83% of the time in self-defense."

20% of the self-defenders in that study were police officers. When you consider someone is using a gun to protect themselves 0.2% of the time, and consider all of the murders that are occurring that other 99.8% of the time because of the prevalence of guns, there's no way to rationally justify their presence en masse.

Regarding your comment that criminals will continue to commit murders without guns:

"Fatalities are three times as likely in robberies committed with guns than where other, or no, weapons are used,[58][59][60] with similar patterns in cases of family violence...A significant number of homicides are the consequence of an unintended escalation of another crime in which firearms are present, with no initial intent to kill."

When guns are present, even in a home argument, there is a three times greater chance that someone is going to get fucking killed, simply because of how deadly they are. If you reread that last sentence, "A significant number of homicides are the consequence of an unintended escalation of another crime in which firearms are present, with no initial intent to kill," that means massive amounts of people are getting killed in the United States every year because of the presence of a gun, rather than a knife, or brick, etc.

We are so much less safe because of the prevalence of guns. People who own guns, even legally, are more likely to be involved in a gun-related incident (including suicide), simply because of the presence of the gun itself. So many gun advocates present themselves as these macho, domineering patriots who are tough to the bone, yet the fear which drives people to believe that they need firearms in their life betrays something that I cannot explain.

Lastly, the notion that the United States would turn into some sort of Nazi regime if guns were no longer legally allowed by the public is absurd and paranoid to the point of being seriously delusional. A country like England is so similar to our own, and has no guns among the public, and their citizens aren't getting rammed up the butt by giant policemen and soldiers with bayonets. It's ridiculous, and it's a very lame way of justifying gun ownership.

All of these people fear what we might become without guns, and yet plenty of other countries are living with far less danger and fear because they were sensible enough to get rid of them. We are killing ourselves, and our children, yet we apparently need these goddamn things.

A guy walked into my old workplace and shot a college student in her face, body, and head repeatedly because she wouldn't pay attention to him. Walked in and shot her, right in the middle of a busy store, with a good hundred people around. That kind of stuff happens every day in the United States, whether it's a husband and wife arguing and one of them getting mad enough to pull a gun, or two teenagers who live in opposite streets feuding with each other, firing a bunch of rounds, and murdering a 2-year-old baby playing in the park with their stray rounds.

You talk of safety, and we've allowed so much of this country to become a virtual war zone, where people are gunned down in horrible fashion every day. Innocent people. People will still be angry and try to kill others, but it's once again a proven fact that a gun, rather than any other weapon, is far more likely to kill one or many of the people involved. It's so incredibly frustrating.
