I know skydiving very well and that late turn was intentional. It's called swooping, and is not a regular landing pattern. The pros do it to show off and is much more dangerous than regular skydiving. We call it 'hooking in', because you basically sling shot yourself at the ground, turning that hard, that low.

Modern ram air canopies will do 50+mph forward speed, and when you turn hard you translate that into downward speed. Turning at the very last second is a definite fuckup.
