No experience, I've seen a few vids where divers will punch an inquisitive shark in the snout. I think that delivers the message, "I am a predator too, not prey." That's my plan if I ever get caught when I'm out swimming.

To armchair quarterback, just prior to the final fatal lunge, the guy was doggypaddling in place, crying and moaning for somebody to rescue him. Then the shark surfaced from the right and lunged. If he had stayed focused on the shark, he had a good opportunity to punch that shark in the snout when it surfaced. Doing that might have bought him the few more seconds needed for that boat to scoop him up.

It's safe to say that the myth that sharks take a bite out of humans and don't like it has now been busted. That thing ate him alive, that was no sample bite.
