Re: Deadly Volcano Triggered Tsunami Interrupts Live Concert Engulfing Crowd
The problem with Indonesia (as well as Chile, Alaska, and others) is that the islands are close to a subduction zone, and tsunamis move incredibly fast - often over 500 mph. So, even though they now have a state-of-the-art detection system in the Indian Ocean that only takes about 3-4 minutes from the generation of a tsunami to people on the street getting text alerts, the best case scenario there is a tsunami making landfall 30-40 minutes after being generated and detected, with the average warning time being 20-25 minutes and possibly as little as 12-15.
