Ow, and just to add for some more clarification, in the last decade there have been countless people who were killed intervening in a fight while someone else who was also innocent was getting beaten or stabbed to death, and the person intervening ended up suffering the same faith. So after a few dozen heroic helpers getting killed while intervening for sometimes such a stupid act as some drunken guys throwing bicycles into the canals or harassing girls, people are weary(sp?) to jump in and help other when their own life is on the line, because it has unfortunately happened so many times before that those heroes get killed while doing so.
