Re: Corvette Z06 Show Off Pays the Price.
Sorry, but what you stated is not completely true. Bald tires can have more grip, if they're clean and have been warmed up sufficiently. Not more grip than a racing tire, but more grip than a normal road tire. Because as stated, it has more road contact with the rubber. But you are also correct because under normal, even most circumstances the bald tires will be softer and pick up debris more easily. And little things such as small amounts of sand, gravel, and dirt/dust are always present on roads and will effect the grip tremendously. None of this had anything to do with this accident though. Inexperience did. People think, probably because they've done it in less powerful vehicles that you just smash the gas and do burnouts or launch past cars. When you're driving a powerful rear wheel drive this is extremely stupid and obviously dangerous. One tire looses grip before the other and you're going for a ride unless you're a great wheelman or get lucky. That all that happened, he floored it, one of two things happened. One tire broke loose and the other didn't. And even for a split second this can cause a spin. Or both tires broke loose and then one grabbed some grip for even a split second. In a powerful rear wheel drive you just can't when you're driving along at 35+ mph just stab it to the floor. Even great drivers have a hard time controlling a burnout at that speed and above. Tony Stewart was great at it. He would do burnouts going in like 60 or maybe 80. He's a legend, everyone else should just not. This guy would have had a chance if he just kept it floored, maybe he would have did a donut. |

Under no circumstance will a worn out bald tire have more grip than it did when it was new. By the time the tread is gone, all that's left in a very thin layer of rubber that will barely provide any sort of traction.

Concur That car has a shit ton of nannies, but they only work if you keep them on. Almost certain that driver turned everything off & decided WOT was the way to go. It's funny, really haven't seen this that often at HPDE or autocross, but at Cars & Coffee... Lots of near "crowd-plow" action, from several different makes & models of big torque cars. |

People underestimate the power they have under their hoods. I see people driving like complete morons out here in California all the time. I'm surprised I don't see shit like this more often.
