Some cars in Brazil are fueled with natural gas (real gas, not gas as short for gasoline).

CNG cylinders work at 200 bar and can cause nasty explosions, like this.
I doubt that is what happened there. Looks like some planted an explosive then waited for the right location to kill who ever was inside the vehicle. A gas station would be a perfect cover. Good job from the Killer!!!
