He didnt cut half his brain out. It may have sliced a small piece but its mostly skull. You can see the cut went right by his ear.

He sliced off a decent chunk of his brain. Not anywhere near a full hemisphere, but still pretty impressive, If you look at the 2nd pic you can see the piece of brain he cut off, at the right hand side of the pic.
