There was a financial motivation that pushed the timeline up also. He was technically still in office, so he still had all his life insurance and other associated state benefits available for his family if he were to die. He would've lost all of those benefits once officially sentenced. He would've had to cover the court fees, and there was a $300k debt he was going to have to pay for also. His wife ended up getting somewhere around $3mil (adjusted for inflation) after his death.

His sister claimed Budd didn't even know about losing the pension money when he was sentenced and that it wasn't a factor in his suicide, but I don't believe her lol.
