A couple of more things to notice right at 28:20...

Pay attention to the two dangling strings mounted on the front window's support beam. Watch them the few seconds before 28:20 and then notice how they suddenly go limp. The strings were angled to the right, which I would think indicates that the helicopter was banking to the left in a tight turn. This is further corroborated by the attitude indicator.

Next, notice how loose the stick is in the few seconds leading up to the crash. Before the stall warning kicks in, you can see the pilot moving the stick all over the place. Could he be in a really rough and turbulent downdraft due to the weather, or is he right on the edge of the helicopter's stall envelope due to shitty piloting skills? I've never flown a helicopter so I don't know how the stick is supposed to behave. But it seems to be jostling all over the place.

I know there was some moderate turbulence in earlier parts of the video (when the start to enter the cloudy portion of the flight). It looks like the crash was a combination of factors...

• VFR flying during IFR conditions
• Bad piloting skills
• Low visibility
• Possibly clipping a tree or other obstacle with the rotor while banking
• Sudden downdraft or change in airspeed that resulted in a stall

I wonder if the pilot overreacted when he saw terrain.


I was thinking about those boom-strike crashes too where the main rotor chops the tail boom off.

I have a video here of the aftermath and details plus other pictures of them from a 6:30 Portuguese news story about them...have no idea how to put it up. I don't think it would belong here anyway.
Bride=32 years old
Brother= 40 years old
Girl= just says 5 months pregnant
Pilot=33 years old
Groom interview...groom was devastated. The after math shows a group of about 9 running into the woods but the helicopter is so destroyed that you can't see anyone in the wreckage.

It looks to me like it was pure pilot error. I captured a sequence of screenshots just before the crash. Look at the attitude indicator. The helicopter is in a steep pitch to the right as well as being pitched upward. Just look at the screenshots one after the other and it looks like he just stalled it out and it dropped out of the sky.

A crass error on the part of the "pilot" unbelievable! Who hires these clowns!
