The utility companies in the state I live in stopped disconnecting people for non payment during the summer months. This change was made after an elderly woman was disconnected because her payment was about $25 short, and she ended up dying in her apartment from the extreme heat. Utility companies need to do more to ensure the vulnerable populations are not put in jeopardy like this.
