These were coca farmers, not cocoa farmers, protesting because government agencies in Bolivia are trying to take control of the coca business around La Paz which is legal. This means heavy taxation so less profit for the farmers.

This. I laughed when I saw “cocoa” cuz they sure aren’t making chocolate there. I lived in Bolivia for some time and it’s pretty neat to see them loading the big bags of coca leaves into trucks. EVERYONE down there always has a cheek full of coca leaves. It’s like their chewing tobacco. The riots and protests get pretty crazy. I was there in circa 2003 and there were quite a few at the time. You didn’t want to be a gringo walking around at the time. |
