All this victim-blaming is astounding to me. Think through this scenario empathetically and honestly; how many of your peers, at 18, would have handled an armed robbery with aplomb? How would you have reacted? Put yourself in her position. It's dark, it's late, you're thinking about your birthday festivities - the stupid thing your best friend said, those awful boots that woman was wearing, how that cute guy kept smiling at you. And then you're jarred into the present by a man who has appeared out of nowhere to block your path. He's yelling at you to give him your phone; you're scared, confused, and your initial reaction is to freeze and reflexively say something like, "What? Leave me alone!" And then the shot, and you're gone before you even grasped the gravity of the situation. |
