Collapsed from exhaustion????? No, he collapsed because Griffith knocked Paret's brain into the 4th row of spectators. Rocky Balboa never took an ass whooping like that. What was the ref looking at as Paret took 20+ brutal head shots, most of them when he was defenseless?

Its the way it was back then, a Championship fight was decided by the fighters if at all possible...... He could of went down, his corner could have jumped in to save him.

I honestly don't think a lot of flashy boxers today would have lasted back then, toughness was worth a lot more when it was 15 rounds with 6 ounce gloves.

I agree, no way in hell Mayweather could last 12 rounds, let alone 15 rounds against the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson

Mayweather can not hit hard, can you imagine him trying to go toe to toe with Fullmer, or Carmen Basillio? They would laugh him out of the ring

Or having the stamina to go 15 rounds in 120 degree heat against Joey Maxim?

Todays fighters are jokes compared to the old school legends

Re: Benny "The Kid" Paret Calls Emile Griffith a "Maricón" Before Their 1962 Title Fight

All title fights before 1983 were scheduled for 15 rounds, so this fight STILL had 3 rounds to go!

Rob666 correctly said this on the 1st page
That's correct! It's true the WBC & WBA versions of the championship 15 round title fights ended then(1983), but not the IBF version.. see 1986's cruiserweight war between Dwight Muhammad Qawi losing a 15 round decision(and his IBF title) to a very young Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield. I really enjoyed the 15 round fights...The year I was born Mike Weaver knocked out then undefeated Big John Tate to win the WBA's Heavyweight title, if the fight had been 12 rounds Tate would have won an easy unanimous decision..as it turned out Weaver knocked him out cold in the 15th round with only seconds remaining

Re: Benny "The Kid" Paret Calls Emile Griffith a "Maricón" Before Their 1962 Title Fight

It was a title fight, but not for Parets welterweight belt, it was only fr Fullmers middleweight belt

Fullmer was the middleweight champion and Paret was the welterweight champion

Paret stepped up a weight class to fight Fullmer which was a tremendous mistake

So if Paret had beat Fullmer he would hold both belts, if he lost he would retain his welterweight belt and Fullmer would successfully defend his belt against Paret.

If Paret had two baseball bats instead of boxing gloves in each hand with him in the ring, Fullmer would have still beat the living piss out of him

Parets manager was pushing Paret way beyond his limits as a fighter

Even other fighters were telling Paret "Dont move up and fight Fullmer, its like punching a brick wall, you could hit him 100 times in a row and he would just laugh. Oh and he also hits harder then 99% of the heavyweight fighters"

I always look at the face of old lady sitting ringside when Fullmer has Paret against the ropes and keeps throwing powerful rights to the head and body one after the other

When Fullmer lands a body shot that can be heard for miles, she shakes her head in disgust and closes her eyes as if she is saying "Good god why did they let him in the ring with Fullmer?"

Paret should have never fought again after the beating he took from Fullmer, yet a couple months later he is in the ring with Griffith

Just a tragic series of events that lead to his death
Yes seems like taking such a thorough ass kicking from the middleweight champion like that you wouldn't be calling your next challenger for your welterweight title a "Maricón" only 2 months later..but the really ironic thing about calling Griffith a homo or a ****** in spanish before their fight is .. Benny was actually right about him , The only other professional boxer who was quoted as saying that he had relations with both men and women was U.S. Virgin Islander Emile Griffith, who told The New York Times in 2005 that he struggled with his sexuality for years. His comments came decades after he ended his 18-year career as a pro boxer.
(Taken from an article about current boxer Puerto Rican featherweight Orlando Cruz ..he announced to the world that he is gay on Wednesday)

That is correct, later on in life Griffith admitted to being with both men and woman

I think where Paret saw Griffith that way is that before he turned pro Griffith was a Haberdasher for a womans hat factory

So peddling womans hats around New York City was not the manliest job in the world before becoming a pro boxer

No doubt if Griffith liked men and woman back in the 50s and 60s he would keep it a secret

In fact if he was confused about it or scared the truth would come out he would have even more fury behind his punches

The Documentary touches on Griffith in later life visiting gay brothels and getting beaten up by gangs of gay thugs in New York

If anybody is interested in this thread I suggest watching "Ring of Fire" I have it on DVD so I have not looked for it online but im sure its there

Its my second favorite documentary behind "Hoop Dreams"

It's actually called a sub dural hematoma, not that it makes a difference. Dude took a major ass beating.
