Re: Benny "The Kid" Paret Calls Emile Griffith a "Maricón" Before Their 1962 Title Fight

Almost always sub dermal hematoma...... fancy way of saying he's bleeding into his brain.

I saw a documentary about this fight, Griffith was never the same after.
I think you mean subdural hematoma.
Here's a subdermal hematoma.
Fancy way of saying, a bruise. A really bad bruise. They go down after a few weeks and gradually clear up. I had one myself after being stabbed.

Subdural refers to the Dura Mater. Or Tough Mother. Here's a great diagram.

Subdural hematomas are usually the result of a serious head injury. When one occurs in this way, it is called an "acute" subdural hematoma. Acute subdural hematomas are among the deadliest of all head injuries. The bleeding fills the brain area very rapidly, compressing brain tissue. This often results in brain injury and may lead to death.
Because this fighter reacted so quickly in the moments after he went down I don't think it was a subdural bleed since those come from the smaller vessels. Looks to me more like intracranial.

Here is an post mortum photo of an intracranial bleed.

The fact that the man died 9 days later tells alot. I am sure they would of successfully drained a subdural hematoma. That they didn't or couldn't seems to indicate the problem was much worse. maybe torn brain tissue with a bleed deep inside. Would be great to see his brain dissection. Maybe he wasn't even treated at all for it. That's really unfortunate if that's the case.

Nice work my friend! I would of like to think with today's advancements he would of likely been saved.Yet TBI's are some of the oddest/serious conditions we shall know.I remember seeing the HBO doc where Griffith vists Benny's son at his grave,,it gets emotional as one could expect..but it's a nice moment between them.Really haunted him for a long time. Max baer wasn't the same after the ernie schaff fight. He lost a U.D to him 2 years prior. This time around he pulverized him, knocking him silly out cold in the last round.5 mos later Ernie takes a fight against Primo Carnera(monster of a man) and is killed in the ring by a left jab.Autopsy shows menegitis resulting from the baer fight.Complained of headaches and general unwell feelings from the fight up until the end.For a smaller heavyweight max baer was one of the hardest hitting men that ever lived.

Re: Benny "The Kid" Paret Calls Emile Griffith a "Maricón" Before Their 1962 Title Fight

Oh wow what a great post! I enjoy classic fights very much and I was not familiar with this one until just now. What a beating and the Fullmer beating to Paret was brutal, i'm assuming the fight with fullmer was a non tital one since paret was still champ when he fought griffith. Awesome videos, are you going to post the boom boom mancini one soon? He lives in the same town as me and i've seen him before since I use to set up boxing rings for the figh promoter that I know since I use to do MMA fights. So that would be interesting to see.
The Mancini video is on youtube....... Another you might be interested in is Nigel Benn/Gerald McLellen...... McLellen lived but is unable to see, hear or tak care of himself anymore.
It is one of the most brutal fights I've ever watched, and I've seen a few.

There's quite a few amazing brutal boxing matches around, IMHO most are from days gone by because in the old days a Championship fight was pretty much to either the death or someone quitting, the Ref wasn't so quick to stop a fight.
6 ounce gloves and 15 rounds didn't help matters either, IMHO all of the changes to the sport are because it tarnishes boxing whenever someone gets killed.

Even now, there's FAR more fatalities in boxing.

I agree

As far as brutality is concerned, this is the hardest punch I have ever seen landed in a boxing match.

And yes I know all about Marcianos "Suzie Q" that landed on Jersey Joe Walcott

The most amazing part of the clip im about to post?

Somehow Holmes gets up, and amazingly grabs and ducks his way to finish the round. Then comes back to beat Shavers!

How Holmes got up after that punch is beyond me

Listen to the punch, it sounds like Shavers hit Holmes with a baseball bat (im sure Holmes felt it that wy as well)

What a great champion Holmes was

For me, Nigel Benn/Gerald McLellen match and aftermath was extremely disturbing, a lot more than seeing somebody`s body chopped off.

Your right, I don't think even now that Holmes gets the recognition he deserves..... I really feel he'd give any champion from any era a ton of trouble, and I don't know of anybody ever had a better jab..... Fuck I love his jab!

They tried to kill each other..... McLellen almost had him a couple of times too, it was a hell of a fight.

I agree with you brother

Holmes jab is a thing of beauty

And I hate when Holmes gets snubbed when people talk about the all time greats

He is in my top 5 heavyweights of all time
