The actions of Paret at the weigh in before his final fight have come under scrutiny. It is alleged that Paret taunted Griffith by calling him maricón (Spanish slang for "******") Griffith wanted to fight Paret on the spot but was restrained. Allegations of homosexuality in 1962 were considered fatal to an athlete's career and a particularly grievous insult in the culture both fighters came from.

I have read that in the dressing room before the fight Griffith was so out of control in wanting (i.e. screaming, drooling, smashing lockers, sweating, speaking in tongues, scaring the piss out of his manager and trainers) to get into the ring with Paret to fight him and make him pay for hurling such an insult in front of fans and the media at the weigh in

You have to remember that in 1962 even suggesting that another man was a homosexual, let alone calling another man a ****** in front of thousands of people was by far the worst possible insult

Paret knew that, and maybe he thought it would get under Griffiths skin and make him feel weak or cloud his mind

The Griffith that entered the ring that night was not fighting Paret for the welterweight title, he was fighting Paret to make him take back what he said

This is the clearest copy of the televised title fight that I have in my massive fight collection

The images are strong, you can see the fury in Griffith

The images are also sad, as you can see Paret slipping away with each punch

I have the Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini and Duk Koo Kim fight in full on VHS

Just need to transfer to DVD then rip to my computer, then create a clip the last minute or two of the fight

Paret never regained consciousness and went into a coma after the fight, and died ten days later

Almost always sub dermal hematoma...... fancy way of saying he's bleeding into his brain.

And the documentary is amazing

Gene Fullmer had a lot to do with Parets death as well

Because Paret fought Fullmer right before Griffith, and Fullmer hit twice as hard and beat Paret worse then Griffith did

Yet Paret was allowed to fight Griffith a couple months later

I have some footage from ESPN Classic thats slightly speed up and grainy, that I will find and post
