Something like a Type-II phaser on heavy stun would have done the job. But unfortunately, the unknown entity that controls the American government and gets to play with retrieved alien tech doesn't want to let those kinds of secrets out of the bag just yet, so dude gets a shotgun blast to the face for now
I hope in my lifetime I get to experience being blasted by an alien weapon in the hands of a skittish rookie. One more for the bucket list
