Re: 7 Football Fans Killed in a Horrific Traffic Accident, Romania
it was indeed lane assist: Survivor of Romanian minibus crash blames lane assist system A survivor of Tuesday’s minibus crash that killed seven fans of Greek soccer club PAOK and injured three has claimed that the vehicle’s lane assist system may have contributed to the accident, one of his doctors said Wednesday. The tragedy occurred on a two-lane road in Timisoara. The victims were traveling to a Europa League game in Lyon, France. It was not clear where the witness was seated in the minibus. Footage of the crash shows the black minivan overtaking a tanker carrying alcohol, drifting back into its lane, before suddenly veering back into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with a passing truck. Greek doctor Dimitris Koukoulas, speaking on state broadcaster ERT, said the injured man told him the lane assist system locked the steering wheel, preventing him from returning to his lane after overtaking. Lane assist is a driver-assistance system designed to prevent vehicles from unintentionally drifting out of their lanes. Using cameras and sensors to detect lane markings, it can warn the driver or gently adjust the steering to keep the car within the lane. Lane assist turns off automatically when turn signals are on. Authorities are investigating multiple factors to determine the cause of the accident. Koukoulas said the survivor is in better condition than the other two injured passengers, with fractures mainly in his lower limbs. Meanwhile, family members of the victims have begun arriving in Romania to identify their loved ones. |
