Balut is popular and probably tens of thousands of Filipinos and other South East Asians eat it close to every day without harm. I've never tried it and opinions from my Filipino friends range from "it's the best f-cking thing in the world" to "it's the most f-cking disgusting thing in the world". I don't know what happened here and I am likely to be way off-base, but this looks to me more like poor healthcare management resulting in sepsis than a straightforward case of food poisoning. |

To be fair, the fact that it was balut mostly adds to the grossness factor. Cured meats, dairy products, fermented fruits and vegetables, or even a regular, non-fertilized egg without a developed embryo inside that has gone bad could have done the trick. I know that a bad egg can be deadly since before I knew what death was. But an egg, consisting of a shell with a tiny, invisible crack, full of yolk and soft fetal tissue constitutes the perfect breeding ground for hidden nasty infections. And being something exotic, that people seem to shoot the liquids inside, that reduces the odds a bad one may be identified by looks, smell or taste. It looks like even the flesh around the holes they made to flush her system was going necrotic before she deteriorated. They flushed out the core of the infection from her stomach, and it appeared that she was making recovery, but her immune system and the antibiotics they gave her couldn't handle the bacteria that got into other parts of the body, which eventually bred and ate her from the inside. |
