Balut or balot (“bah-loot,” both singular and plural) are the 16-to-21-day-old fertilized duck eggs that tend to either fascinate or revolt foreigners—to be clear, it’s a boiled egg that contains not only a yolk but also a semi-developed duck embryo. Often hailed as one of the Philippines’ most iconic and exotic delicacies, it is cracked open and eaten with a dash of salt and not much else. The truth is, balut is not unique to the Philippines—it also exists in nearby Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia—and it’s said to have been brought to these shores (once again) by the seafaring, island-hopping Chinese. The name is derived from the idea that when you crack open the shell of a cooked balut, the duck embryo should be “balut sa puti” (literally, wrapped in white). To make it, the duck eggs are brought to the magbabalot (“mag-ba-ba-loht,” balut maker) on the day the eggs are laid. The fertilized duck eggs (determined through candling) are incubated in baskets surrounded by warmed rice husks until they’re ready to be boiled and sold.

I've consumed weird-ass street food in more than a dozen different countries and have made it my personal policy in life to try damn near any cuisine that is offered, at least once. I've eaten pretty much every animal organ you can extract and have very very few items on my No, Not the Fuck Ever List.

Long pig and white fucking balut are pretty much it.

And I'd probably try the former before the latter.

I can only guess in that case she had anaphylactic shock for her to need breathing equipment and all that surgery. Maybe all her organs where shutting down. Puzzling though.

Most likely went septic from an infection, and went into multi-organ failure ( which would explain need for life support eqipment ). So sad!!!

I eat balut sometimes and it tastes good but it has high cholesterol. I love the taste of the yolk.

However, even some fellow Filipinos don't like it and the overall premise of it is quite disgusting after all.
