Re: Woman Attacked by Own Pitbull
this might sound weird, but if a pit bull attacks you, and bites you, you should jam something in it's anus. That was it will let go. you will need to stab it's eyes immediately afterwards though, because you will not have a second chance. Cut up it's face before it attacks yours. The dog will be killed after this anyway, so best to protect yourself! |

Re: Woman Attacked by Own Pitbull
That's not how it works. I've trained police and service dogs (for the disabled) and it's all the same mechanism. The reason most dog attacks by civilian dogs can't be called off is because most pet dogs don't know the command "off" or "let go." A dog that knows what biting is can be trained to know what not biting is. Once you've conditioned a behavior, it's much easier to teach the opposite. The reason you don't see this sort of thing a lot with (your example) labradors, is because you rarely have wannabe thugs owning them. I've seen some very poorly behaved Labs that have injured people just because they haven't been trained to know better. |

Re: Woman Attacked by Own Pitbull
Exactly. Children do things that rile up dogs without TRYING to be threatening. They need to be taught how to behave around animals, because like it or not, animals will always be around. Even if the family doesn't own one of their own, chances are there are friends that own dogs or cats or whatever. Kids need to be taught not to squeal or scream, run, or reach too quickly to pet a strange dog. Majority of the attacks on kids are from the kids trying to be affectionate with the dog and the dog perceiving it as a threat (hugging the dog, leaning on its back -- behaviors in the dog world that are considered aggressive and threatening) or teasing the dog.

Re: Woman Attacked by Own Pitbull
Did you actually socialize her with other dogs and correct her when she was being dominant? Did you get her spayed? Those two things change A LOT of things. Not abusing a dog and loving them isn't the same as training and socializing a dog. |
