Re: Very Rare Complication During Child Birth
Given the discoloration of the scrotum, I'd venture a guess that the size is due to swelling; the child's breech position probably served to trap blood therein. Hopefully circulation was not so impeded as to cause damage to the testes. P.S. Best. Band Name. Ever. |

Re: Very Rare Complication During Child Birth
Tearing of the rectal/vaginal wall is only rare in the developed world. It's more common in undeveloped countries because they don't have the tools to deal with delivery complications. The tear (called a fistula) can lead to incontinence, infection, nerve damage, etc., and if the women survive they are often ostracized by their communities because of the constant leaking, stench, and so on. In the U.S., this probably would have been a cesarian birth. Not sure why they had this woman give birth naturally. I'm glad she and baby are okay, but what a ghastly injury... |

Re: Very Rare Complication During Child Birth
The mother got a tear during this birth. There was no way the doctor could have seen that because the baby was still inside. This is a tear, NOT a fistula. Most recto-vaginal fistulae are due to an overlooked (small) tear in the recto-vaginal wall during child birth. These fistulae can be there for months or years, slowly making a hole between the vagina and rectum. But there are also cases women will notice something wrong within a week after giving birth. While taking a dump they are also losing feaces out of their vagina. Worse cases are losing faecal matter all the time. And yes, in Africa are these cases a real problem, I agree. But THIS case was extremely rare as I wrote in my post. Not because the woman got a tear, but because the baby was born vaginally as well anally at the same time. |

Re: Very Rare Complication During Child Birth
Speaking of meconium, my fiancee gave birth to our daughter 12 days ago. She gave birth here at our house, both of our children have been born at home. Not by choice, but both times she has been in labor less than 15 minutes. I was at work this last time, and when I left for work at 5 a.m. she had no signs of labor, he water broke at around 8:45, and our beautiful baby girl entered the world at 9:01. Thankfully the paramedics arrived a minute before she came out. Any the meconium, was all over the end of my bed lol. Gave me a good reason to buy a new bed. There was not much blood, not on the bed at least. However, there was a huge amount of blood I had to clean up after our son was born at home, I helped deliver him :/ He came out breech, it was terrifying. |
