Very Rare Complication During Child Birth

I found a very interesting article in a Dutch gynaecologists-journal. It was written in Dutch so I will give you a (summarized) non-medical translation.

A 29 year old woman went into labor after 38 weeks pregnancy. Her baby was in a breech position so an episiotomy was given. Just before the next contraction the left foot and the left lower leg of the baby was born out of the mother's anus. It was clear the baby's leg had torn the recto vaginal septum.

The mother was instructed not to push further and the baby's leg was then gently pushed back into the vagina by the gynaecologist. A normal breech birth followed: A son of 2860 grams (6 lbs 4 oz) with an Apgar Score of 6 after one minute. After 5 minutes the baby had an Apgar Score of 9.

[I]After the birth, examination showed a recto vaginal septum tear of 3 centimeters. After surgery the tear and the episiotomy healed completely. Mother and child are doing very well.

This kind of complication is extremely rare. There's only one other written case known.

(So this baby was halfway born out of his mother's anus because of a hole in the vaginal/rectal wall of her. This is why you must not confuse this with common perineal tears or third degree lacerations during child birth.)

There is only one picture of this birth which I will upload. And yes, the mother IS hairy and yes, that IS poop. The poop is called "meconium" and it's the first poop of the baby. The poop is pushed out of baby's anus because of the pressure of the breech position.
