For those who care, you can also have one for your bladder - one that drains urine out. Used in cases, for example, people with bladder cancer. From memory I think its an illeo-conduit. Some stomas are only temporary, they are used when the bowel that has been bipassed by the stoma, needs time time to rest and heal (after surgery and repair etc). The stoma can be 'reversed' in these cases. But of course some unfortunate people have them permanently most likely because of cancer, major trauma or birth defects. But they learn to deal with it and learn how to hide them well. You would be surprised to know how many people you may see and pass by during the day who may have one.....
