When most people hear the word 'skin' they think of the fleshy organ that covers most of our body. And they're exactly right. However, I forgot to include that in addition to the skin we usually think about, Stevens-Johnson syndrome also affects other epithelial surfaces as well, such as the mucous membranes, including the mouth and eyes. It's only the superficial aspect of the epithelium (skin) that's sloughed off; however, in the eyes, this outer surface (the cornea) is very important for vision and is why these patients can often become blind if their eyes become involved.
