I know he didn't try to grab the snake, I meant MOST bites are due to trying to pick up the snakes. Still sticking your hand in a hole is not very smart. We have the Timber Rattler, Copperhead, Cotton Mouth, Eastern Diamondback, Coral snake, and Pigmy rattlesnake. Most cause horrendous damage, extremely painful, or death (some cases) if not treated quickly.
