Re: My Son Has Geographic Tongue

The scallops on the side of his tongue are a benign condition known as "scrotal tongue". Benign migratory glossitis, aka geographic tongue, is an autoimmune disorder that is difficult to control but mostly harmless. Just saying
thanks!

Re: My Son Has Geographic Tongue

seems like its more common than i thought! it might be becuz he had thrush as a baby but the fact that it clears up then returns speaks otherwise. i have even taken him to an ENT DR but noone has ever given me a straight answer. we have just learned by trail & error to leave things like orange juice & spicey foods alone. good luck with yours

Re: My Son Has Geographic Tongue

Sounds like you've done a lot of research. Did you try vitamin B supplements? I bet you have, but just wanted to check. Poor dude.

Re: My Son Has Geographic Tongue

I'd agree that it's more likely to be fissured tongue (aka scrotal tongue) than geographic tongue. Geographic tongue has lesions with defined margins and, usually, a whitish layer on the taste buds. Fissured tongue is totally benign, but can cause discomfort. There is no cure for either. But no cause for alarm either way.

For the flare ups, try to keep some unsalted white rice or plain yogurt or sour cream. They seem to soothe discomfort of fissured tongue. My partner is 37 and has had this all his life. Sometimes it looks like his tongue is about to bleed, but it's not going to.

Good luck, and don't worry.

Re: My Son Has Geographic Tongue

BTW, just rechecked my PDR. Geographic tongue presents looking like it has burn marks, like drops of hot oil might make. Even more support for fissured tongue, not geographic tongue. (IMO, that's a better diagnosis. As others have pointed out, geographic tongue is an autoimmune disorder; fissured tongue is not.) Oh yeah, nothing to do with previous thrush. That was only due to an underdeveloped immune system. Again, good luck and don't worry.

Re: My Son Has Geographic Tongue

Thanks for the info & the good advice Dancho. We do a lot of 2% milk & ice cream for soothing. It does help. :)
