There's no "let it" about it -- if your feet/hands freeze, this is the result. I would guess this is a homeless man; they are frequently victims of frostbite because they can't get in somewhere warm.

Oh nice. I just cut up a sheepskin for a musical instrument case I am making. First effort I effed it up beyond recall so I am on my second iteration. Pretty sure it will be good this time. I never make the same mistakes twice. I always try for new and more interesting mistakes. Your mittens don't have finger slots then? Here in San Diego it's not even cold today.
