I've done a GREAT DEAL of research on this as an anthropologist and honestly, that comment couldn't be further from the truth. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT voluntary for almost every single one that has it done. Most of the time the child is very young when it happens and has no say in the matter, other times it is done older, but the social consequences of refusing make doing so unthinkable. In cultures where it is widespread, a woman cannot find a husband if she isn't circumcised and is considered unclean and immoral. The labia are often considered disgusting and in some cases dangerous (some African cultures believe a baby born to an uncircumcised mother will die) and that for the sake of her controllability it must be removed. I have no idea where you got the idea that FGM is a voluntary omage to the vagina -- that is simply absurd.
Though yes, it is not a part of Islam officially, but it has been incorporated into Islamic customs by people who don't realize it isn't an actual part of the religion.

You completely misunderstood my comment, I said subincisions are an homage to the vagina. A subincision is a coming of age ritual held by Aboriginal males as a right of passage to manhood in which the underside of the penis is split in half to create a pseudo vagina.


The practise is pretty obscure nowadays, so it's understandable that you may not have heard of it until now. But in the future, before you go blasting someone for being ignorant it, might help if you took the time learn what they're actually talking about
