Animals do not have immortal souls, so they are not capable of "sin" as we know it.

What do you mean "where was god?" God didn't go anywhere and was not sleeping on the job. He is NOT to be blamed for this! This is the result of original sin which was committed by man himself. If you read the bible, you will find that man messed this up, not God.
