The girl probably had bone cancer. They saved what they could of the leg and reattached it permanently assuming the transplant works. Now she will be placed in a prosthesis more easily with her ankle joint working as the knee.

It's called a tibial rotation-plasty, the procedure is sometimes called the Van Ness Procedure. It's generally used to treat Osteosarcomas, although it's been used in other instances to preserve some form of a "knee." The heel is also designed to bear weight and shock whereas the middle of a long bone is not. It's one of the few medical procedures that makes me go |
