I think he could make it, he was coherent. Lots of skin grafting and trips to the doctor in his future now.

Sure, it's very survivable. The skin over the scalp does contain some nerves for facial muscles, but less so toward the top and back of the head (unlike many apes). Skin grafting should work fine for him.

My understanding is that scalping was not used as the method of execution, but that scalps were instead taken as trophies of the kill.
