he was attacked after he jumped over the wall of a house to pick up some bananas in the backyard, looks like he did not know there were dogs in the house. (Dogs were not the pit bull breed)

As an EMT, I've seen a fair amount of this kind of injury. And as it is, most of the time the dogs that attack, are NOT pit bulls.

Wow. Is that even survivable? I mean, isn't that the preferred method that native americans used to kill settlers & each other way back when? I imagine if he can avoid infection, he'll live.
