Personally, I've been to Kenya (Nairobi and Arusha), and the reason I went there was to climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It's potentially a violent place, yes....but most tourists don't get shot in the head. People go on safari, work for Non-profits, climb Kilimanjaro and don't have any bad experiences. I've been to Kibera (the largest slum in Kenya) and didn't feel unsafe for a second.

6th July 2014 ~10am, Kibokoni, Mombasa: 30y old Maria Tatyana ( surname withheld ) was with two or three other Russian tourists & a tour guide when 3 local men ( one with a pistol ) tried to loot them. She was shot in the head along Kitui Street when she put up a struggle to surrender her belongings/camera. The thieves fled in a car witnesses said, the police said they did so on foot.
This brutality pales immensely in comparison to what's being done to whites in S. Africa & Zimbabwe and nothing's being done to curb the butchery.
