I think that it would been better to keep him alive and get him to jail... for entire life
And put the burden of paying for his incarceration on the people of his country? The world doesn't need people like that, and quite frankly, I wish that the U.S. govenment would go back to public executions.

the lashing might've been a bit unnecessary, but he got what he deserved nonetheless
In my opinion, cruel and unusual punishment would be where the punishment was greater than the crime committed. So no, I don't think it was unnecessary. They should have flogged him until he begged for death. Then continued flogging him. Then I guess they might as well kill him when the crowd gets bored.
