As much as I want to finally solve the mystery of this pic, reading the book excerpt on amazon on this guy unfortunately it doesnt sound like it is. Apparently Ouchi, upon arriving at the hospital, only had a burn on his hand - everyone was surprised at how much radiation he had actually absorbed since he did not "look" that bad. Guess we have to keep looking :(

you're absolutely right. No man would've survived 83 days under these conditions. Hours at most

A bullet in the head would be the most humane thing at that point.

I can't imagine a more painful way to die. "Painful" doesn't even begin to describe what the man in that picture must've endured.
Is there a word more extreme than 'agony'...?

This picture is one of the internets biggest enigmas; nobody seems to know where or indeed when(its been around for ages) it originated. Looks like a major full body burn:(

Did my research today, and this is definitely the victim from the 1999 Tokaimura nuclear accident. Some other things I found...

The guy's face melting as the radiation sickness progresses

Our famous picture, with a caption!

まだまだ写真はいっぱいありますが、グロテスクなのでやめておきます。
There are more pictures, but they are grotesque so we will stop.

10シーべルトの被曝、絶対に助かりません。
10 sieverts of radiation exposure, there is absolutely no chance of survival.

ほかの医療機関が拒否した中で、東大が引き受けて全力で治療しましたが結果は見ての通りで。
Other medical institutions having refused, the University of Tokyo took over and attempted treatment with all their might, but the result is as you see here.

何をやっても傷ついた遺伝子は再生能力を持たず、壊死していました。
遺伝子が破壊されると細胞分裂ができません。細胞は壊れていくだけです。
(stuff about cell division and necrosis, my Japanese fails me)
Damn, I'd really like to get my hands on the book (A Slow Death: 83 Days of Radiation Sickness)
