It's really a shame, when a dog breed with so much potential is bred indiscriminately without regard for temperament. IIRC, before WW2 Great Danes had the same issues: huge, powerful dogs with vile tempers. But breeders took it upon themselves to breed out that trait, and now Danes are some of the most relaxed and loving dogs around. Unfortunately hip dysplasia and gastric torsion (sp?) are still issues.
