The 12 photographs form a mixed collection from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan rather than a record of one incident. Most cannot be tied to a confirmed date, place or event.

One photograph shows the wreckage of an Army UH-60A Black Hawk that crashed at Tallil Air Base in southern Iraq on September 21, 2004. The helicopter went down about two minutes after taking off shortly after 9:20 p.m. Firefighters and medical personnel reached the wreckage within minutes and pulled all four soldiers aboard out alive. Their injuries included facial wounds, broken bones, burns and a broken ankle. All four were taken to an emergency room within about 30 minutes and flown to a hospital in Germany within 24 hours. No hostile fire was reported, and no final cause of the crash was established.
